Mucknell Abbey

Inspired by Psalm 139

Lord, you have searched me out
and known me
from the beginning of all time.
The wonders of your providence
are too great for me.
But I know you know
my motives, my impulses and my inclinations
even when I know them not myself.
I know in my heart of hearts
you desire to protect me
from all that leads me away from you.
Yet, you give me the freedom
to distance myself from you
or to draw closer to you.
Your love for me is too wonderful for me to understand
despite the fact you know me through and through.
If I rise to the heights
of ecstasy or enlightenment you are there.
And if I sink to the depths
of despair or depression you are there also.
I discover on my life’s journey
nothing separates me from your love of me
though I may cease to love you
and even cut myself off from you.
O Lord, recreate me with that urgent desire
to be close to you, so close that
I am united with you and to you.
Indeed, that I may be within you.
For without you there is no peace,
no true well-being,
no purpose for which you have placed me here…
